CardioChek proves itself as an accurate, reliable and valued cholesterol testing system for use throughout the UK in the screening for heart disease, validating over 5000 systems in use in the UK primary care setting

Nuneaton, Warwickshire- September 2012 – BHR Pharmaceuticals Ltd, a market leading provider of point of care diagnostics into the UK healthcare market today announced that HEART UK, the cholesterol Charity have accepted that CardioChek may be used as a point-of-care system for lipid testing in the community for screening proactively for heart disease.

“2012 is a very significant year in BHR’s 22 year history. Despite the challenging global economic environment, we have achieved a consistent increase in sales demonstrating the continued strong demand for the CardioChek point-of-care test system. As the Department of Health step up the significance of the “Health-Check” programme, in their drive to reduce the incidence of heart disease, the need for reliable lipid testing systems for use in primary care grows. Ramesh Patel, Managing Director commented that “he was delighted that HEART UK had reviewed the latest validation data of the CardioChek, and noted that it was suitable for use as a community screening tool. This in turn would increase interest from primary care organisations, with a partnered approach to achieving the screening numbers in England” Ramesh said “This news, together with our achievements this year represent BHR’s commitment to strengthen our leadership in point-of-care cholesterol testing and build on our already strong momentum in the healthcare and wellness industry.”

Jules Payne, HEART UK’s Chief Executive added “HEART UK recognise the importance of the NHS health checks programme in identifying people at increased risk of heart disease. Point-of-care testing is a useful screening tool enabling patients and healthcare professionals instant feedback on cholesterol levels. Raised cholesterol is one of the greatest modifiable risk factors for heart disease which is still the biggest killer in the UK. People over the age of 40 should have their cholesterol tested. People who have a first degree relative with premature heart disease should consult their GP for a full blood test.”

MP and diabetes campaigner Keith Vaz visited Quotient Diagnostics in Walton-on-Thames on Wednesday 19th September to collect four Quo-Lab analysers used to monitor diabetic patients by Brian Hickey, CEO of Quotient and Ramesh Patel, Managing Director of medical supplies company BHR Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

The analysers will be used by Silver Star, a charity that Mr Vaz set up to promote awareness about diabetes. Silver Star runs mobile units that carry out diabetes testing in towns and cities in the UK and will shortly be handing over the keys to a fourth unit to its Indian branch. Mr Vaz, who was diagnosed with diabetes five years ago, was given a tour of Quotient’s manufacturing plant by Mr Hickey and volunteered to be tested using the Quo-Lab analyser. Afterwards Mr Vaz said “I was diagnosed as diabetic when I visited an open day at my local doctor’s surgery. In some ways I was lucky as I had the chance to make changes to my diet and lifestyle. We need people who are at risk of developing diabetes to know that testing is easy and painless and that regular monitoring is vital.” “What I have learnt today is that there is an alternative to daily blood glucose testing to monitor at-risk patients or those with diabetes – and it’s been developed and manufactured here in the UK.”

Mr Hickey said “As a politician Mr Vaz recognises the importance of finding ways to prevent the onset of diabetes because of the strain diabetes-related illnesses put on the National Health Service.” Mr Hickey continued, “Instead of testing diabetes patients’ glucose levels on a daily basis our Quo-Lab and Quo-Test analysers are used monitor patients’ health just four times a year. This means patients need less testing and allows vital healthcare funds to be diverted into other areas.”

The EKF Quo-Lab analyser is designed and manufactuterd in surrey and has been developed particularly for developing world markets. Since Quo-Labs launch in July, EKF has sold more than 250 devices to customers worldwide, including as far afield as India, Lebanon and The Philippines.
