The mix of the different allergen groups reflects the variety of possible causes that can trigger an allergy. The allergen composition in the FastCheckPOC® 20 ATOPY is based on scientific expert assessments and EU regulations.

The integrated inhalant allergens were selected on the basis of recommendations by the GA2LEN Commission (Heinzerling et al.; Allergy 2009: 64: 1498–1506). The selection of food allergies follows the findings from the guidelines of the German Society for Allergology and Clinical Immunology (DGAKI) (Kleine Tebbe et al.; Allergo J 2009; 18: 132-146) as well as the EU regulations for the labeling requirements of allergy-triggering foods. As one of the essential inhalant allergens in the range, the birch allergen has been integrated into FastCheckPOC® 20 ATOPY as the chief allergen. The main allergen of birch pollen (Bet v 1) is among the “pathogenesis-related proteins”, which are ubiquitous in plants, and presents a sensitization rate of over 80%. Due to high sequence homologies, it is responsible for cross-reactions to other tree pollens, pomaceous fruits, stone fruits, nuts and soy.

In addition, the latex/ficus mix is an important component in integrated inhalant allergens. It provides information about possible cross-reactions to certain fruits such as kiwi and banana (latex-fruit syndrome).

In order to satisfy the increasing importance of allergic reactions to food, food allergies are also the focus of allergy diagnostics. This importance is reflected in the selection of allergens for FastCheckPOC® 20 ATOPY. With food allergens, cod is representative of freshwater and saltwater fish. The main allergen, the muscle protein parvalbumin, is ubiquitous in fish and leads to various cross-reactions.

Peanut, as a further significant cause of allergic reactions, is on the list of labeling-required allergy-triggering foods and is included on the ATOPY panel. Sensitization to the allergens Ara h 2 and Ara h 3 (storage proteins) can lead to severe reactions, including through to anaphylactic shock.

With this comprehensive combination of 20 allergens and allergen mixes, the ATOPY panel in FastCheckPOC® 20 is an ideal basis for screening for sensitization.
